Nace el 6 de enero en Campobasso, Italia. En 1950, debido a la difícil situación de la posguerra, su familia se traslada a Venezuela, instalándose en un primer momento en la ciudad de Valencia, estado Carabobo. Al poco tiempo, inicia su educación primaria en el Colegio Agustín Codazzi de esa misma ciudad. En 1964 su familia se residencia en Caracas y continúa sus estudios en el Liceo Pompei. Su pasión por la fotografía comienza al frecuentar el estudio fotográfico de su hermano mayor. Al concluir en 1965 sus estudios del bachillerato asume su vocación por la fotografía y comienza a trabajar como asistente del fotógrafo holandés Egon Kofman, actividad en la que permanecería dos años. A partir de 1967 y hasta fines de la década del sesenta forma parte del grupo de fotógrafos de planta en el programa de televisión el Show de Renny y Renny Presenta en Radio Caracas Televisión. En 1970 junto a los fotógrafos Ángel Abad y César Von Der Heyde crean en Caracas un estudio de fotografías publicitaria. Sin embargo, esta experiencia es breve ya que en 1973 instala su propio estudio. Viaja a su tierra natal con el interés de especializarse en fotografía, allí entre 1983 y 1984 estudia en el Instituto de Fotografía Alberto Latuada en Roma, Italia.

Regresa en 1984 a Caracas y comienza a realizar trabajos fotográficos sobre Venezuela para la Enciclopedia Británica Barsa, hasta mediados de 1997. Al año siguiente abandona la fotografía comercial y publicitaria para dedicarse totalmente a la fotografía de reproducción de obras de arte para libros y catálogos de artistas plásticos nacionales e internacionales. Sin embargo, es a partir del año 2000, que sin abandonar su trabajo profesional, comienza a desarrollar un lenguaje plástico personal en el campo de la fotografía artística. En 1999 inicia su actividad expositiva, este año sus fotografías son incluidas en la II Subasta de Fotografía, Galería Odalys, Caracas. En el 2004 participa en el 62o Salón Arturo Michelena, Ateneo de Valencia, Valencia, estado Carabobo. En el 2005 realiza su primera exposición individual Renato Donzelli a la manera de…, Galería Espacio- Arte, Fundación Daniela Chappard, Centro Cultural Trasnocho, Caracas. Muestra que gira principalmente en torno al desnudo femenino, temática que es desarrollada con la superposición de planos y elementos pictóricos. Posteriormente en el 2006 participa en la muestra Exposición: se hace camino al andar, artistas inmigrantes de ayer-venezolanos de hoy, Museo de Bellas Artes, Caracas. Bajo la curaduría de Douglas Monroy. A mediados de 2007 realiza la exposición individual Transparencias del desnudo. Fotografías de Renato Donzelli, Sala La Fotografía, Ateneo de Caracas, Caracas, muestra compuesta en su gran mayoría por fotografías intervenidas y la utilización de recursos visuales como texturas desgastadas y fondos provenientes de su ejercicio en la reproducción de obras de arte.

Renato Donzelli

Was born on January 6th in Campobasso, Italy. Due to the onerous circumstances that followed war, in 1950 his family moved to Venezuela, where they first settled in the city of Valencia, Carabobo state, where Donzelli began his primary education at the Agustin Codazzi School shortly afterwards. In 1964 his family moved to Caracas where he continued his studies at the Pompei High School. His passion for photography led him to be a frequent visitor at his older brother’s photography studio. When he graduated from high school in 1965, he embraced his vocation for photography and began to work as assistant to the Dutch photographer Egon Kofman, with whom he worked for two years. As of 1967, and up until the end of the sixties, he was one of the photographers working at the television studios where Radio Caracas Television filmed the Show de Renny and Renny Presenta. In 1970 Donzelli, and photographers Angel Abad and Cesar Von Der Heyde, set up an advertising photography studio in Caracas. This experience, however, was brief because in 1973 Donzelli set up his own studio. He later traveled to Italy to carry out specialist studies in photography and from 1983 to 1984 he studied at Photography Institute Alberto Latuada in Rome, Italy.

In 1984, he returned to Caracas and began to do photographic work about Venezuela for the British Barsa Encyclopedia up until mid 1997. A year later, he stopped commercial and advertising photography to dedicate himself fully to photography of art works reproduction for books and catalogues of Venezuelan and foreign artists. However, in the year 2000, without leaving his professional work, he began developing a personal artistic language in the field of artistic photography. In 1999, he started his exhibition activity and during this year his photographs were included in the Second Photography Auction held at Odalys Art Gallery, Caracas. In 2004 he took part in the 62^nd Arturo Michelena art contest, Ateneo de Valencia, Valencia, Carabobo State. In 2005 he had his first solo exhibition Renato Donzelli, in the manner of..., Espacio-Arte Art Gallery, Daniela Chappard Foundation, Centro Cutural Trasnocho, Caracas. This show mainly focused on the female nude, a theme that he developed by superimposing planes and pictorial elements. Later on, in 2006, he participated in the show Exhibition: you path your way by walking, immigrant artists from yesterday- Venezuelans of today at the Bellas Artes Museum, Caracas. In mid-2007, Donzelli had a solo exhibition curated by Douglas Monroy called Transparencies of the Nude. Photographs by Renato Donzelli at Photography Room, Ateneo de Caracas, Caracas. The exhibition mainly showed manipulated photographs and the use of visual resources such as worn out textures and backdrops that came from his time working with art works reproduction.
