Nace en Caracas el 24 de enero de 1958. Estudia dibujo y pintura en la Academia Orsini, Madrid, España, en 1975. Prosigue su formación en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas Cristóbal Rojas de Caracas entre 1976 y 1978. A partir de 1982 estudia Educación, Mención Arte en la Universidad Experimental Simón Rodríguez, Caracas. Participa en 1978 en la exposición colectiva Octubre libre, La Fototeca, Caracas. Impulsado por su interés en la fotografía documentalista forma parte del Grupo Apoyo Visual, colectivo de fotógrafos activo entre 1978-1984 que produce actividades expositivas y de promoción cultural en la población barloventeña de Mamporal, estado Miranda. En 1988 recibe Mención Honorífica en la I Bienal de Artes Plásticas, sección Expresiones Libres, Galería de Arte Nacional, Caracas. Y en 1979 interviene en el Primer Concurso Internacional de Fotografía El niño y la estructura, Centro de Artes Integradas, Teatro Teresa Carreño, Caracas. En 1983 es seleccionado en el VIII Salón Nacional de Arte Aragua, Museo de Arte de Maracay, y en el III Salón Nacional de Jóvenes Artistas, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas.

En 1989 presenta su primera exposición individual Homenaje al sol. Una instalación, Sala RG, Caracas, donde ejecuta una instalación de grandes proporciones compuesta por materiales diversos como madera, cerámica, tierra, cobre y fibras vegetales, elementos que apuntan hacia una geometría universal, la ecología y nuestra cultura ancestral. En mayo de 1993 expone pinturas, ensamblajes e instalaciones en la exhibición Luis Noguera-Douglas Monroy: La casa, la intemperie, Museo de Bellas Artes, Caracas. Con esta muestra reitera su acercamiento al mundo vegetal, así como a la arquitectura, los altares y composiciones sobre los dinteles de puertas que recuerdan a las grandes estructuras incas del antiguo Perú. Más tarde, en el 2003, participa en el LXI Salón Arturo Michelena, Ateneo de Valencia; este mismo año, con un conjunto de fotografías de tema sobre la ciudad, forma parte de Siete visiones del paisaje urbano en el evento del Primer Mes de la Fotografía, Centro para las Artes Arturo Michelena, Banco Industrial de Venezuela, Caracas. En el 2004 organiza su segunda muestra individual Douglas Monroy. Devocionario, Templarios la Galería Taller en Caracas, donde incluye dibujos, esculturas y pinturas sobre tablas de pequeño formato a modo de relicario. A partir del 2012 y hasta el 2015 emprende una serie de fotografías de carácter urbano, registra marchas civiles, concentraciones, murales y vallas con consignas políticas. Su trabajo se encuentra representado en el Museo de Bellas Artes, Fundación Banco Industrial de Venezuela, Centro Rómulo Gallegos y en colecciones particulares.

Al margen de su actividad artística inicia a partir de 1993 una intensa labor profesional como investigador de arte y, al mismo tiempo, desarrolla trabajos curatoriales en el campo de la fotografía artística del siglo XIX y contemporánea. Comienza su trabajo gerencial en 1991 y se desempeña como Director General de la Fundación Museo Arturo Michelena de Caracas hasta 2003. Desde mediados de ese año y hasta 2006 asume la Dirección Ejecutiva de la Galería de Arte Nacional. Con el propósito de afianzar la investigación y difusión de la fotografía crea en el 2014 el sello Monroy Editor, donde publica los títulos Renato Donzelli desmesura del cuerpo, Petre Maxim metáforas modernas, Alexis Pérez-Luna las paredes no mienten, Carlos Germán Rojas trato y retrato. Así mismo, en el año 2016 publica su primer libro como fotógrafo titulado Douglas Monroy patria, donde realiza un trabajo cuyo tema ha sido los desequilibrios y devastación de los últimos años en el país.

Douglas Monroy

Born in Caracas 24 January 1958. He studies drawing and painting at the Orsini Academy of Madrid, Spain, in 1975. He continues his studies at the Cristóbal Rojas Art School of Caracas during 1976-1978. Since 1982 he studies Education for the Arts at the Simón Rodríguez Experimental University, Caracas. He participates in the Free October collective exhibition in La Fototeca, Caracas, 1978. Driven by his interest in documentary photography he becomes associated with the Visual Support Group, a collectivity of photographers acting during 1978-1984 in the production of exhibitions and cultural promotion in Mamporal, in the region of Barlovento, state of Miranda. In 1988 he receives an Honor Mention in the 1st Plastic Arts Biennial, Free Expressions section, from the National Art Gallery. In 1979 he participates in the First International Photography Contest entitled The child and the structure at the Center of Integrated Arts of the Teresa Carreño Theatre, Caracas. In 1983 he is selected for the 7th Aragua Art Salon in the Maracay Art Museum and the 3rd National Salon for Young Artists, Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas.

His first individual exhibition entitled Homage to the sun. An Installation is presented in 1989 at the RG Hall, Caracas. It is a large-scale installation composed of different materials such as wood, ceramic, dirt, copper and vegetable fibers, dedicated to universal geometry, ecology and ancestral cultures. In May 1993 he displays paintings, assemblies and installations in an exhibition presented at the Fine Arts Museum of Caracas under the title Luis Noguera-Douglas Monroy: the house, the outdoors. This show reiterates his interest for the vegetable world, as well as for architecture, altarpieces and compositions on door lintels reminding vast Inca structures of ancient Peru. Later, in 2003, he participates in the 61st Arturo Michelena Salon, Valencia Athenaeum; the same year, with a set of photographs of his native city, he collaborates with Seven visions of the urban landscape, part of the First Photographic Month event at the Arturo Michelena Arts Center, Industrial Bank of Venezuela, Caracas. In 2004 his second individual show is organized: Douglas Monroy. Prayer-book, Templers at the Workshop Gallery in Caracas, including drawings, sculptures and paintings on small-format tablets like reliquaries. From 2012 on until 2015 he undertakes a series of urban character, registering civil marches, manifestations, murals and boards with political mottoes. His work is represented in the Museum of Fine Arts, the Industrial Bank of Venezuela Foundation, the Rómulo Gallegos Center and private collections.

Along with his artistic activity he begins in 1993 an intense professional effort as art researcher, while simultaneously developing curatorial labors of 19th century as well as contemporary artistic photography. His management activity starts in 1991, being appointed General Director of the Arturo Michelena Museum Foundation, staying there until 2003. From the middle of that year up to 2006 he assumes the Executive Direction of the National Art Gallery. In order to secure research and dissemination of photographic oeuvres, he creates in 2014 the Monroy Editor publishing company, having already published Renato Donzelli, body excess and Petre Maxim, modern metaphors, Alexis Pérez-Luna the walls do not lie, Carlos Germán Rojas deal and portrait.
